It Doesn’t Have to be Like This
We’ve been doing a lot of camping in our RV this summer. RV parks are a great place to people-watch. On one of our trips we were parked next to a couple of families sharing adjacent campsites. The campground had its own lake, so there were a lot people walking back and forth from the lake with their paddle boards, inflatables, and kayaks. One of the kids camped next to us was a boy, probably 13 or 14 years old. This boy was very overweight, and it pained me to watch him walk back and forth from the lake. At such a young age he already had gynecomastia (enlarged breasts/man boobs), and swollen ankles. Walking seemed to be an effort for him. There were also some older teenage girls, 2 of whom were overweight, although not as much as this boy. One afternoon they came back from the local Safeway with 12 packs of soda, and bags of Doritos and Cheetos etc. I was so tempted to say something to them, and quickly realized this would be inappropriate. I share this story with you not to be critical, but to emphasize the fact that so many people just don’t understand the dangers of consuming highly processed “foods”.
I posted the picture of a beach scene from the 1960’s, and another from 2020. What’s different and what happened? Note that in the photo from the 1960’s, almost no one is overweight. Compare that to the picture from 2020 and you will see that there are lot more overweight people.
This correlates with what the statistics reveal. In 1960, 13% of adults and 5% of children were obese. In 2020, 32% of adults, and 22% of children were obese. While these numbers are disturbing, the childhood obesity rate increasing by fourfold is most concerning since these kids will likely remain overweight as adults and suffer the health consequences including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, stroke, and decreased life span. How did this happen? I wrote about this in another blog last year: “The Widespread Epidemic of Disease in America: A Closer Look at the Overconsumption of Polyunsaturated Fats”. The 1970’s were the time when the use of industrially processed oils like soy, canola, corn, and other seed oils skyrocketed. The overconsumption of these oils has been shown to increase obesity and the other diseases associated with it. Almost all processed foods are loaded with these oils. Couple that with the high carbohydrate content of these foods and you have the perfect recipe for a health disaster.
The obesity epidemic we are now seeing is almost completely preventable, and reversible. We know diets don’t work. It’s not necessary that people need to starve themselves to lose weight, they just need to eat differently. If you know someone who struggles with weight, you can help them by sharing our “Metabolic Reset Program” with them. This seven week program will guide them step by step to change how they eat to lose weight and keep it off. This Program goes way beyond weight loss however. Even if you or someone you know does not struggle with weight, resetting your metabolism will help transform your health. Past participants have experienced increased energy, better mood and focus, improved hormonal balance, reduced pain and inflammation, and better immunity.
Our next Metabolic Reset Program begins October 1st. Don’t miss this opportunity to help yourself or someone you know get on the path to better health. Call our office at 360-588-9108 to register today.
