Are you Serious or Curious? What’s Your Plan for 2024?
I know that you are all interested in being healthier, but are you interested or committed? You’ve probably heard the meme about breakfast; the chicken is involved, but the pig is committed! Given the fact that 93% of Americans are not metabolically healthy, it’s likely that some of you fall into that category. So exactly what is metabolic health? When our body can properly use the food we eat, we are metabolically healthy. The five criteria of metabolic health: waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose level, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level and triglyceride level. Having 3 or more of the criteria out of normal range is an indicator of metabolic syndrome.
The criteria for metabolic syndrome are:
Fasting blood glucose levels above 100 mg/deciliter
Waist circumference greater than 40 inches in men and 35 Inches in women.
Blood pressure over 130/85
Triglyceride levels over 100 mg/deciliter
HDL (high density lipoprotein or “good cholesterol”) under 50 mg/deciliter.
Why is metabolic health so important? Metabolic health is absolutely crucial to long term health outcomes. Metabolic syndrome has been correlated with a significantly increased risk of heart disease, cancer, Type II diabetes, neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. These are the four leading causes of death in America today, and are sometimes called the 4 Horsemen of Aging. Fortunately, metabolic syndrome can be reversed, which will significantly reduce your risk of succumbing to one or more of the 4 Horsemen, and extending your lifespan. Our goal should be to live as long as possible in a state of health, and this is called healthspan. Being metabolically healthy will increase both lifespan and healthspan.
How can you determine your metabolic health? We offer a Metabolic Health Assessment in our office which includes bloodwork, waist measurement, and blood pressure.
