Our approach is patient-centered wellness with healthcare methods that foster the natural healing process. We will work with you to create a custom plan that is designed to address your needs through a combination of safe, gentle, and effective health strategies:

Neurological Integration System

Your brain monitors and controls every cell in your body. Symptoms are caused by from breakdowns in the signaling between the brain and muscles, joints, organs, and glands. NIS uses gentle muscle testing to find and correct neurological interference, allowing your brain to restore normal function. The NIS System was developed in New Zealand by Dr. Allan Phillips and is practiced across the globe. Dr. Jim Bentz is the only certified NIS instructor in the U.S.! NIS is the cornerstone of our practice, and the most powerful healing modality Dr. Bentz has found in over 30 years of practice. You’ll be amazed at the transformations in your health when your brain is in full communication with your body.

Our Healthcare Model

Our philosophy of healthcare is based on the principle that health is innate, in other words, it comes from within. Our bodies are self- regulating and self healing. Dis-ease (lack of health or ease) is the result of interference to our inborn healing potential. When sources of interference such as infection, stress, trauma, toxicity etc. are removed, your body can express it’s full healing potential. We believe that since health comes from the inside-out, that you are ultimately responsible for and in charge of your health. Our mission is to remove any interference, and empower you to take control of your health.

Dr. Jim Bentz, Health Coach and Educator, NIS Trainer for North America

I was lucky in growing up for so many reasons. I grew up in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, the oldest of 9 kids. LaCrosse is a town of 50,000 in the Mississippi River Valley, and we grew up roaming the bluffs and river as kids. My parents were both very health conscious. Dad was a dentist who did amalgam removal and recommended whole food diets and supplements to his patients in the 50’s and 60’s. He gave me a copy of Weston Price’s “Nutrition and Physical Degeneration” when I was a teen. That book made a huge impact on me and I still have and treasure it.

With 9 kids my mom was the “domestic engineer”. We rarely had processed food, and never had pop or candy. I remember Mom reading Adele Davis, Rachel Carson, and Euell Gibbons growing up. I graduated from the university of Wisconsin with a degree in Biology, and later decided I wanted to work in health care. I attended Palmer College College of Chiropractic in Davenport Iowa, graduating in 1984. I began practice in Bellevue, WA. in 1985, and moved to Anacortes in 1997. My wife Candice and I feel very blessed to live in such a special place.

I’ve always loved learning, and am still passionate about studying health and the amazing human brain and body. It’s an honor to work with all our amazing patients, and experiencing the transformations in their health with them. I also have the privilege of teaching NIS to other practitioners in North America and beyond, and one of my life goals is to change the way healthcare is delivered in the United States.

Wendy Saver

Hello and welcome to Fidalgo Island Health Center. I’m Wendy Saver and I joined the team here in October 2013. I have an extensive (15 plus years) administrative medical background working at a major hospital in Boston starting in early 70’s. From there my husband and I opened up three very successful family style restaurants over a 20 year period. I strongly believe that working at the hospital and the restaurant prepped me for any type of hospitality work.

In 2011 the timing was right for a change and we downsized our lives, drove across the United States from one camp site to another. Our destination was Guemes Island and that is where we landed three weeks later. Timing is everything and when a position opened up in this office I was fortunate to be offered the job.

Working closely with the patients has been such a rewarding aspect of this job. Going the extra “mile” for someone to try to accommodate their needs is very important to me. I like to consider my role here as someone who strives to make everyone feel comfortable and cared for from that first connection between patients and the office. It goes without saying that I am blessed to be working with amazing people and feel that the support and caring overflows into the care of our patients. I look forward to meeting you and helping you in any way that I can to get you to the next level of your physical and mental well being. We are here for you ❤️

“After I saw you last Friday, I sat at the library for several hours studying, then drove to Glacier for the weekend. Friday night was the first night that I did NOT take the pain medication hydrocodone in 12 months. WOW. Saturday, we did a low stress hike, then an evening relaxing, I did take a few pain pills that night…nothing like usual tho. Sunday, after driving a good part of the day and doing errands, I did not feel the need for the meds. Monday eve after working all day on my feet at the medical clinic, I did take a few, but a lesser amount again. I can’t wait to see you again!!”

“When I met Dr. Benz I weighed 87 pounds and had been told I was Anorexic Nervosa. Months prior to going to Dr. Benz, I had been going to my regular Dr., a counselor and a nutritionist. I never believed I had Anorexia but I really didn’t know what was wrong with me. I was getting sicker and sicker, my parents by my Dr. request, took me to an Anorexia Nervosa Specialist who proceeded to tell my parents, that I did have Anorexia, and that I needed to be placed immediately in a facilities for Anorexics, in Florida. I commend my parents for not following through and believing in me and what I was telling them. My nana goes to Dr. Benz, she pleaded my case to him and he agreed to see me. It was 3 weeks before my high school graduation ceremony when I had my first appointment with Dr. Benz. I’ll never forget his words, “You Do Not Have Anorexia, You Have Parasites!” No one can ever imagine how happy and relieved I was to hear Dr. Benz say, those words. I am so thankful for Dr. Benz and I truly believe he was my life saver. After my first appointment with him I started gaining weight back and feeling better, by graduation I had gained 20 pounds and now I’m back to normal and feel great. I believe in his methods and theory so much so, that I am going to college to pursue what he does. I thank you Dr. Benz.”

“Felt a bubbling in my ears. Neck and back felt great. I could sit straight up again. Felt like I was getting more flow into my head. Light headed in a good way. Legs felt light. Almost as if I was walking or running on air. A good ache. A light flutter in chest/ heart/ stomach and pelvis. I didn't realize how much pain I had till it was gone. I got the most incredible energy. I hadn't had that kind of energy in 10 years. I was so full of energy that I went on a huge trail run the next day, the next day, and the next day. I hope I can maintain that feeling.”

“In the summer of 2010, I was under a lot of stress. Job and household stress. I was planning my wedding. I should have been on the top of the world! There was a lot of responsibility at work. I didn't realize how bad it was until I became non-functional. I went to my family physician who prescribed an antianxiety/antidepressant medication and a sleep aid. They helped for a while. On return to the family physician my medication was increased. It did not help. I literally developed an aversion to food. Nothing sounded good, nothing tasted good, I was nauseous, and had dry heaves every morning with nausea throughout the day. (Nope, not pregnant...not possible). I was losing a lot of weight. I wanted to curl up and not move. I forced myself to go to work. I saw a counselor regularly. It was getting close to our big day, our beautiful fall wedding.

I had my annual appt with my gyn nurse practioner . When I told her what I had been experiencing she asked me "aren't you a patient of Dr. Bentz? How long has it been since you have seen him (at least a year)? This is not you. You need to be grounded or something. Why don't you see if you can get in emergently."

I did get in emergently. Dr. Bentz ran me through his battery of muscle tests. I always smile when I am there. It is very alternative. But WOW, IT WORKS! I left there relaxed, better able to eat, food actually tasted good. He gave me an adrenal supplement. I went back for adjustment a couple of times to make sure "it stuck". My wedding day was great! Fun! I was able to taper off the medication. I no longer needed a sleep aid. It is amazing how you can be non-functional mess one minute and relaxed and functional and able to make decisions in your best interest the next!

Thank you, Dr. Bentz!”
