We are here to give hope to those who have lost control of their health. We offer you the possibility of transforming your health through leading edge wellness strategies, education, and empowerment to take back personal control and responsibility for your well being.
We have helped hundreds of people just like you regain their health, and know from experience that your body has the power to heal itself! Our approach is patient-centered wellness care using methods which foster the natural healing process. Dr. Bentz and his staff will work with you to create a custom plan that is designed to address your needs through a combination of safe, gentle, and effective health strategies:
Neurological Integration System
Your brain monitors and controls every cell in your body. Symptoms are caused by from breakdowns in the signaling between the brain and muscles, joints, organs, and glands. NIS uses gentle muscle testing to find and correct neurological interference, allowing your brain to restore normal function. The NIS System was developed in New Zealand by Dr. Allan Phillips and is practiced across the globe. Dr. Jim Bentz is the only certified NIS instructor in the U.S.! NIS is the cornerstone of our practice, and the most powerful healing modality Dr. Bentz has found in over 30 years of practice. You’ll be amazed at the transformations in your health when your brain is in full communication with your body.

In wellness care, the doctor and patient collaborate as partners. We act as your “health coach,” first identifying the underlying cause of your symptoms. Using cutting edge, proven approaches to wellness care, we guide you through the lifestyle changes that are essential for reclaiming your quality of life – putting you in control of your health!
Anyone who succeeds at a high level in life has a coach, whether in sports, business, acting, and yes, even health. If you already had the knowledge you needed to get control of your health, you wouldn’t be looking for help. Your health is the last thing you want to risk a “do it yourself” approach with.
Knowledge is power. Understanding how your body truly works is the key that will help you unlock your full health potential. In fact, this is the bedrock of our practice. At each visit, you receive information – based on peer-reviewed research and expert knowledge – about how your body works and how to maximize your health without the use of drugs or surgery.
True Cellular Detox™ Program
Unfortunately, our environment is full of toxins that degrade our health, sometimes with very serious consequences. We are proud to be a certified provider of Dr. Daniel Pompa’s revolutionary True Cellular Detox ™ program. Detoxification at the cellular level can help address a range of health issues, including weight-loss resistance, hormone dysregulation, thyroid problems, diabetes, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, fibromyalgia, autism, and autoimmune disorders.
Designed to enhance wellness through relaxation of the nervous system, the Magnesphere uses very precise, extremely low level electromagnetic fields as you recline in comfort. This technology involves no drugs, no surgery, and no pain. The electromagnetic frequencies can be adjusted to target different tissues, inducing electromagnetic resonance, and stimulating healing. We are one of only two clinics in the state that offer this innovative form of treatment! Learn more….
Let’s face it: the standard American diet is letting our bodies down. Nutritional supplements can help fill the gap left by our eating habits or even by “good” food that is deficient in essential micronutrients due to modern farming practices. Targeted use of supplements can address specific problems and enhance overall health.
A high percentage of supplements are composed mainly of synthetic vitamins, which are not utilized well by the body. We source only the highest quality nutritional supplements, made from organic fruits and vegetables, medicinal plants and herbs, and naturally occurring minerals.
Fidalgo Island Health Center is located in beautiful Anacortes, Washington, the Gateway to the San Juan Islands.
Our Healthcare Model
Our philosophy of healthcare is based on the principle that health is innate, in other words, it comes from within. Our bodies are self- regulating and self healing. Dis-ease (lack of health or ease) is the result of interference to our inborn healing potential. When sources of interference such as infection, stress, trauma, toxicity etc. are removed, your body can express it’s full healing potential. We believe that since health comes from the inside-out, you are ultimately responsible for your health. Our mission is to remove any interference, and empower you to take control of your health.

Dr. Jim Bentz, Health Coach and Educator, NIS Trainer for North America
I was lucky in growing up for so many reasons. I grew up in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, the oldest of 9 kids. LaCrosse is a town of 50,000 in the Mississippi River Valley, and we grew up roaming the bluffs and river as kids. My parents were both very health conscious. Dad was a dentist who did amalgam removal and recommended whole food diets and supplements to his patients in the 50’s and 60’s. He gave me a copy of Weston Price’s “Nutrition and Physical Degeneration” when I was a teen. That book made a huge impact on me and I still have and treasure it.
With 9 kids my mom was the “domestic engineer”. We rarely had processed food, and never had pop or candy. I remember Mom reading Adele Davis, Rachel Carson, and Euell Gibbons growing up. I graduated from the university of Wisconsin with a degree in Biology, and later decided I wanted to work in health care. I attended Palmer College College of Chiropractic in Davenport Iowa, graduating in 1984. I began practice in Bellevue, WA. in 1985, and moved to Anacortes in 1997. My wife Candice and I feel very blessed to live in such a special place.
I’ve always loved learning, and am still passionate about studying health and the amazing human brain and body. It’s an honor to work with all our amazing patients, and experiencing the transformations in their health with them. I also have the privilege of teaching NIS to other practitioners in North America and beyond, and one of my life goals is to change the way healthcare is delivered in the United States. Because of my focus on how the brain regulates all body function, I’ve been called “The Brain Doctor” by some.
Hello! I am Susie Teague. I am very excited to be a new part of the team at Fidalgo Island Health Center. After working with children, adolescents, individuals, and families for 20+ years for physical, emotional, and mental health and wellbeing, I began studying Neurological Integration System (NIS) with Dr. Bentz and Dr. Allan Phillips. For the last two years I’ve been providing NIS health and wellness services to my Lopez Island community.
My background, education and training are various holistic care services – Psychology, Therapeutic Recreation, Herbalism/Nutrition, Ministry, Reiki and more currently, NIS services. Hospitals, community non-profit organizations and schools, are where I shared most of my health and wellness services. As well, in 2006, my husband and I started our small family business, Whispers of Nature. We grow medicinal herbs in our herbal labyrinth garden, process and manufacture herbals and offer various classes and events to the community.
When I’m not serving my extraordinary clients, gardening and processing plants, or tending our goats, you’ll find my husband and I playing music, singing, kayaking, paddle boarding, volunteering in the community, or visiting our beautiful grand-daughter, daughter, family and friends.
I feel deep respect and honor for all beings. I believe in connecting with our internal wisdom and intelligence, and listening, which enables each of us to live to our full potential and capacity. I am so grateful for all of the many blessings in my life.
I look forward to being a part of your health and wellness team!
Hello and welcome to Fidalgo Island Health Center. I’m Wendy Saver and I joined the team here in October 2013. I have an extensive (15 plus years) administrative medical background working at a major hospital in Boston starting in early 70’s. From there my husband and I opened up three very successful family style restaurants over a 20 year period. I strongly believe that working at the hospital and the restaurant prepped me for any type of hospitality work.
In 2011 the timing was right for a change and we downsized our lives, drove across the United States from one camp site to another. Our destination was Guemes Island and that is where we landed three weeks later. Timing is everything and when a position opened up in this office I was fortunate to be offered the job.
Working closely with the patients has been such a rewarding aspect of this job. Going the extra “mile” for someone to try to accommodate their needs is very important to me. I like to consider my role here as someone who strives to make everyone feel comfortable and cared for from that first connection between patients and the office. It goes without saying that I am blessed to be working with amazing people and feel that the support and caring overflows into the care of our patients. I look forward to meeting you and helping you in any way that I can to get you to the next level of your physical and mental well being. We are here for you
Hi, my name is Maddie Knutson. I have been in the medical field for 12 years now. Being a lifelong resident of Anacortes, naturally, I have a love for hiking, the beach, and all things outdoors. Now as the Medical Assistant at Fidalgo Island Health Center I am happy and eager to attend to all your patient care needs. I will be working with you personally from your first appointment and medical intake, and will be your point of contact with any questions you may have. Everyday Dr. Bentz has something new to share with us and in turn we have more to offer our patients in their care and health journey– Always striving for the best and continually learning.
Here’s to you and your health, we look forward to seeing you in the office!

Is Fidalgo Island Health Center Right for Me?
Since 1985, our primary focus has been improving the health and lives of people in the Pacific Northwest. Our patients come to us for a wide range of issues. But we have to be honest with you: not everyone is successful with our program. That’s because you are an active participant in your care, and your success depends on how you implement the healing strategies we recommend.
If you can answer “YES” to these three questions, you would be a good candidate for working with us to improve your health, energy, and vitality!
- Are you willing to do whatever it takes to get your health back?
- Do you believe your health is ultimately your responsibility?
- Are you willing to invest in your health, whether or not it is covered by insurance?
We are committed to working with you on your health. All we ask is that you make the same commitment to yourself!
But don’t take our word for it. Hear from people just like you who have reclaimed their heath with our help!
What conditions do you treat?
Actually, we don’t treat any conditions. Disease conditions and symptoms arise when something interferes with your innate healing capacity. Our focus is on finding the underlying interference which is causing your disease or symptoms, and your body can then heal itself. You are your own best doctor.
Many conditions, respond well to this healthcare approach, including (but not limited to):
|Allergies||Frequent Colds and Flu|
|Autoimmune Disorders||Low Energy|
|Back/Neck/Joint Pain||Menstrual Disorders|
|Blood Sugar Regulation||Numbness|
|Digestive Problems||Skin Problems|
How are you different than a typical doctor?
To call America’s current medical system “health care” is a misnomer. It would be better called “sick care.” Standard practice is a system of disease management, focused on “fixing” symptoms with drugs and surgery, which can lead to further interventions to counteract the side effects of treatments. We look first at the underlying causes of illness, help the body tap into its own healing power, and put you in control of your own health.
Do you take my health insurance?
The health strategies we offer are not covered by health insurance. The insurance system is based on disease management, not wellness. There are no diagnostic or procedural codes associated with the services we offer at Fidalgo Island Health Center, therefore we do participate in any health care plans, and do not bill insurance for any of our services.
