Vitamin D - An Effective Therapy To Prevent & Treat Influenza

Many people have been asking about the coronavirus lately, so I wanted to share this very important information with you.An article by Gerry Schwalfenberg M.D. in the Journal of Canadian Family Physicians cites evidence that there is a correlation between flu outbreaks and the seasonal drop in Vitamin D due to lack of sunlight. He also describes his experience with seeing a dramatic drop in the incidence of the flu by increasing Vitamin D supplementation in his patients, including using mega doses of Vitamin D with the onset of flu-like symptoms.  This produced a complete resolution of flu symptoms within 48-72 hours. This is a strategy that has been used successfully in Europe for several years.  In Germany this is called "Stoss Therapy", and it works because Vitamin D up-regulates genetic expression of immune system specific proteins, cathelicidins and beta defensins, which kill viruses. An extensive review in The British Medical Journalhas shown Vitamin D therapy to be a safe and effective way to prevent and treat influenza.

How to do "Stoss Therapy"

At the first sign of flu symptoms such as a sudden onset of fatigue, fever, or body aches, take 50,000 to 150,000 i.u. of Vitamin D for 2-3 days, reduce the amount you take for 2-3 more days, then take no more Vitamin D for the next month. Click here for specific instructions for adults and children. Please not that this is contraindicated in patients with kidney disease, sarcoidosis, or high blood calcium levels. Also note that the Vitamin D formulation you use is very important.  Use only Vitamin D that is formulated with Vitamin K2 and Vitamin A.It's also a good idea to increase your intake of Vitamin D in winter months as a preventative measure. Evidence shows that around 10,000 iu daily is needed to have a preventative effect. It's a good idea to have your Vitamin D levels checked at least annually, preferably before the flu season begins. Dr. Schwalfenberg has found that blood levels of 100 nmol/L confer significant protection against influenza, and are clinically safe. Finally, at the first sign of the flu, get in for a NIS session.  When you call our office at 360-588-9108 just say its a flu emergency and we'll get you in ASAP.
