Spring was Made for Detoxing

If you overindulged or were more sedentary than you would have liked this past Winter, then you might be searching for a way to kickstart your health so that you can fully enjoy the upcoming summer months. Spring is the season that gifts us with herbs like nettles and dandelion. These herbs assist with detoxification, and are a perfect way to begin your journey back to balance.  

Toxins & Persistent Organic Pollutants

We are all exposed to toxins every day, and while there are many things that we can do to reduce our exposure to chemical and pollutants, it would be impossible to eliminate them all from our life. This is because certain toxins, called persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are found in everything from building materials, the foods we ingest, and even our water supply. While working towards limiting exposure can help, it is also important to know how to support your body in ridding itself of toxins.

A Spring detox can not only help to release toxins, but it can also kickstart your metabolism and balance hormones. For anyone that it is in the process of losing weight, assisting your body in detoxification should be a top priority. This is because one of the places that your body stores toxins is inside of fat cells. When you lose weight, the POPs that were stored inside your cells can enter your bloodstream, making you feel worse than when they were tucked away in your fat cells. Side effects and signs of toxicity can include allergies, skin rashes, systemic inflammation and pain, fatigue, constipation and diarrhea, headaches, brain fog, and so much more.

POPs have also been linked to chronic illnesses and diseases such as cancer, obesity, diabetes, dementia, auto-immune diseases, and autism. POPs can enter your body through the lungs, skin or digestive system. Normally, your liver processes and eliminates toxins. However, when your metabolism isn’t working very well, your body isn’t able to efficiently process high loads of POPS like the levels we can be exposed to nowadays. When these toxins are not broken down and eliminated, this is how they get stored in the tissues of our body like our fat cells.

How do we support our bodies to get rid of these excess toxins? By supporting the pathways through which toxins exit our system! Toxins exit the body via the skin, kidneys and bladder, colon and lungs. Simple things that we all absolutely should do to support our bodies to eliminate toxins are:

  1. Keep your bowels moving. You can do this by ingesting plenty of fiber from fruits and vegetables, taking psyllium, doing the other things that are on this list.

  2. Drink plenty of water. A good rule of thumb is to drink have of your body weight in ounces of water.

  3. Move your body. Preferably enough to break a sweat. Spend some time in a sauna if you are able to.

  4. Take an Epsom salt bath or float in a float pod. The salt helps to draw toxins out through the skin.

  5. Use herbs and bitters to support bile flow and your digestive system to further support detoxification. Some great herbs include: burdock rock, milk thistle, and as previously mentioned nettles and dandelion.
